Culligan reverse osmosis water treatment for hemodialysis applications

The quality of the water used in haemodialysis systems is a key requirement for successful dialysis treatment and should always be available. With the Culligan Reverse Osmosis Dialysis Water Treatment System, you can be sure that you are in safe hands.

30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE - Culligan has more than 30 years of experience in dialysis water management.

THE BEST TECHNOLOGY - Culligan has always been at the forefront of new water treatment technologies. Culligan was one of the first water treatment companies to use reverse osmosis in hemodialysis.

Class IIb Medical Devices - All Culligan medical water treatment systems are CE marked as Class IIb medical devices according to the Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC and Culligan's quality system is certified according to UNI EN ISO 13485 and 93/42/EEC.

Culligan medical products

RO2 MD BiO E Hemodialysis water treatment

For flows of up to 3600 l/h

Culligan RO2 Bi-osmosis is our most technologically advanced dialysis water treatment system.

With an intuitive „touch screen” user interface, the RO2 is not only simple to use, but thanks to the multiple fail-safe systems inside the unit, you can be assured of a continuous water supply at all times.

The user can quickly and accurately monitor all key parameters such as water quality, operating pressure, flow rates and water consumption data thanks to advanced instrumentation and easy-to-interpret flow chart-based displays, as well as powerful graphical trending tools.

Safety is assured by Culligan's BiOzmosis system, which ensures that if one reverse osmosis system has an unlikely problem, the other will continue to work and always provide high quality, safe water.

As well as safety and reliability, the Culligan RO2 haemodialysis water treatment system is designed to use as little water as possible and be as energy efficient as possible, helping you to save money and be environmentally friendly at the same time.

RO2 MD BiO THERMO dialysis water treatment

For flows of up to 3200 l/h

The RO2 Thermo is Culligan's latest medical device certified RO device that produces safe, high-quality water for haemodialysis.

In addition to a fail-safe, PLC-controlled, 2-pass RO system, the RO2 Thermo uses a built-in heat sanitization system to disinfect the system.

RO2 MD BiO THERMO's innovative disinfection system uses water heated to 85°C (185°F) to destroy microorganisms that grow on the surface of the treatment system and distribution loop. This greatly reduces or eliminates the need for chemical sanitization, saving money and also avoiding the handling and disposal of chemicals.

SDS RO Single dialysis system

Flow rate 80 l/h

The SDS (Single Dialysis System) MD is designed with individual patient dialysis care in mind; the SDS (Single Dialysis System) MD can produce up to 80 l/h of water. Ideal for dialysis applications such as home dialysis, emergency care, acute patient care or for patients undergoing transplant procedures where space and mobility are critical. Each SDS unit is a fully enclosed dialysis water treatment system that includes pre-treatment in the form of filtration and dechlorination, followed by reverse osmosis and a break tank.

The unit is mounted on wheels to facilitate mobility. The SDS is designed to be extremely user-friendly thanks to the touch-controlled electronic panel. The SDS MD is equipped with:

  • initial and final flushing device
  • automatic disinfection
  • alarm with sound and light signal
  • continuous monitoring of the quality of the treated water
  • stainless steel main water circuit components
  • 24 volt touch control keypad
  • digital conductivity meter for quality control

Dual Box – Integrated pre-treatment and BiOsmosis treatment system

The complete solution for dialysis water treatment - Culligan's Dual Box system is an integrated treatment system from raw water to purified water. The system includes complete pre-treatment (filtration, softening, dechlorination) and Culligan Bio-osmosis technology. This complete treatment system is automatically controlled via a touch screen PLC for ease of use. For easy installation, the units are housed in corrosion-resistant steel cabinets and only require power, water inlet, water outlet and drainage.

Frequently asked questions

Haemodialysis is a method of mechanically cleansing blood outside of the body to remove various substances that would normally be cleared by the kidneys. Haemodialysis is used when an individual is in relative or complete kidney failure.

In haemodialysis, the dialyzed patient's blood is introduced into an artificial kidney, called a dialyzer, where it flows past a thin semi permeable membrane, while the dialysate (isotonic salt solution) flows countercurrently on the other side of the membrane. Small molecules, such as metabolic waste molecules, diffuse across this membrane, passing from the higher concentration side to the lower concentration side. In this way, the metabolic waste products from the blood are transported to the dialysate, from where the dialysate can be discharged to the drain.

The dialysate is a mixture of purified water and salt solution, which may contain sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate or sodium acetate, calcium chloride, potassium chloride and magnesium chloride. The dialysate is approximately 95% purified water

The quality of the water used in haemodialysis systems is extremely important, as the patient's blood and the dialysate are separated by only a thin, semi-permeable membrane. Haemodialysis patients are extremely sensitive to contaminants in the water, as they are unable to excrete impurities from the distillate by kidney and are exposed to extremely large volumes of water. The estimated water intake of a healthy person is 2 liters per day or 14 liters per week. In comparison, a haemodialysed patient may be exposed to 350-500 liters of water per week.
